KESTER BLACK FOUNDER ANNA ROSS ON KNOWING WHEN TO SLOW IT DOWN

"I'M NOT WASTING MY TIME CONSTANTLY
PUNISHING MYSELF ANYMORE"
When you're running around like a blue-arsed fly, having peeled the nail polish off your third finger in the hopes of making that thing happen quicker, it's time to slow down.
Anna Ross seems to have nailed it (sorry, couldn't help ourselves). We asked the founder and CEO of Australian-made, ethical, and sustainable cosmetics and skincare line Kester Black, to share what she’s learned about balancing a successful business and self-care.
What's one habit you can’t live without right now? Fasting! I've just started doing 23-hour fasts and it has changed my life. I only eat once at night and I'm no longer bloated and lethargic. I have so much more time, I really enjoy my food, and all of my cravings have disappeared.
How do you find your calm when you're ready to crack? I meditate for an hour every morning, so I don't get as stressed out as I used to. I like to focus on how my body actually feels in that moment.
Do you struggle with confidence and self-worth? [In the past] I have done, but I don't anymore. I have been working on the way I speak to myself for the last six years and I think I have finally cracked it.
I wouldn't have allowed others to speak to me the way I spoke to myself, so one day I just stopped. It's incredibly freeing and I'm not wasting my time constantly punishing myself anymore.
What's one piece of advice you wish people would stop giving you? That you have to eat breakfast/three meals a day. It's ludicrous how there is so much misinformation about diet these days. I’ve been intermittent fasting for about three years and it's the best change I have made.
How do you cope with feeling overwhelmed? I go for a walk. If I'm at work, I will walk home and continue working from there. The walk home and the change of environment does the trick. It's a mini break that allows me to refocus.
What have you bought recently (for less than $100) that has had a positive impact on your wellbeing? Nori snacks! They are seaweed snacks I discovered in Korea and I'm addicted. They are full of fibre, iron, iodine and protein. They taste like junk food but they are great for you!
